The coaching process

We will arrange a time when we can get together and discuss your situation and what you’d like to achieve. Most importantly, we will meet and see how we get on – more so than in any other development or indeed consulting work, our relationship will be key.
A typical coaching relationship would begin with an introductory meeting at which we would discuss what you would like to work on. This may be a specific issue you’re struggling with; or how to achieve a long-term goal, or dream; or perhaps you are looking to develop specific skills, such as strategic thinking.
If all goes well, we’ll set a framework for working together and agree a duration and frequency for our sessions. Typically this would mean, in the first instance, committing to 6 meetings, of a couple of hours each, at roughly fortnightly intervals. Towards the end of that period, we would review how we are doing and amend the process and timings accordingly.
Between sessions, you should feel free to telephone or email me with any queries or thoughts.
Whilst the content of coaching discussions is always kept entirely confidential, I believe that, where the company is paying for the coaching, the line manager/HR department has a right to be kept abreast of the broad progress of the coaching. This would begin with a 3-way debate on particular behaviours/skills to be worked on, agreement on time-scales and, where feasible, some indicators of the progress that is desired.
I would then provide brief updates during the process. We might agree some 360-degree feedback at various points. I also encourage the coachee to provide a similar broad feedback (including on their satisfaction with me) to their manager. Coaching may not be a scientifically measurable intervention but it is still possible to ensure a sound overall assessment of the effectiveness of the process.
